Blue River, British Columbia
Saturday, August 30 – Sunday, August 31 (Co-ed Specialty Camp)
This camp is unique.
It’s set at Mike Wiegele’s Heli Resort in Blue River, right in the heart of the Monashee and Cariboo mountains.
It involves morning skill sessions, yet with an even higher coach to participant ratio than usual, and afternoon rides. Saturday’s rides are in the valley, and Sunday’s are in the high alpine, accessed by helicopter.
Finally, it’s coupled with delicious meals and luxury accommodations, and offered as an all-inclusive package.
We ran a camp this way for the first time last year, specifically for a group or riders chosen by Kevin and Jackie from Rebound Cycle. They wanted something special for their clients and friends, and that’s what they got. Special plus.
This year we’re doing it again, and although we’re giving last year’s participants the first chance to sign up, we’re also making a few extra spaces available for those who want to join in.
If you’re interested, read on:
There are currently three main trails in the valley: 1) the Green Mile, featured in the annual Blue River Mountain Bike Festival racecourse, 2) CN, a mix of tricky climbs, descents, roots, log piles, and natural manuals, and 3) CT, an expert rider’s dream of ladder bridges, big drops, and even a little bit of hiking for those who are honestly sane.
The alpine area is the epitome of freeform riding. It’s an endless combination of rock faces and singletrack that lets each group work together to define their own trail, choose their own challenges, and see how many times they can actually resist stopping for photos. To see a sample, visit the galleries from last Labour Day weekend.
And other than that, the resort is honestly amazing. You can see what it looks like by going through their site, but you need to come up to know just how it feels. Oh, and expect to see lots of Mike and Bonny Wiegele too. The last I spoke to them they were planning to take part in the camp.
